In firearms, an extractor is a part in a breechloading weapon's action that serves to remove casings of previously fired cartridges from the chamber, in order to vacate the chamber for loading a new round of ammunition. The extractor holds the rim on one side of the cartridge case so that the recoil of the slide pulls the case out of the chamber as the barrel is held back by the barrel lug impacting the locking block.
